Prime Minister Narendra Modi on unveiled a 112-foot tall bust of Adiyogi Shiva at the Isha Foundation at the foothills of Velliangiri mountains. Underlining the need for peaceful coexistence, Modi said, "Lord Shiva is everywhere" and referred to the bull, peacock and mouse that were the vehicles of the Lord and his sons -- Ganapathy and Karthik. He also talked about the venomous snake Vasuki curled around Shiva's neck to emphasise the importance of peaceful coexistence. The bust, made of steel, weighs 500 tonnes and it took 2.5 years to design it and in eight months to build it. This is the tallest bust in the planet, recognizing the first yogi's unparalleled contribution to humanity. The iconic bust symbolizes liberation, representing the 112 ways in which one can attain to one's ultimate through the science of yoga. As a tribute to Adiyogi, the Prime Minister also lighted the sacred fire to commence the Maha Yoga Yagna across the world.

How Narendra Modi May Have Evolved into 'Modi 2.0

When Narendra Modi swept to a dramatic victory in India's general elections, becoming the first prime minister in three decades to command an absolute majorityin the lower house of India's fractious Parliament, many in India worried about what his victory would portend. To political opponents and members of India's liberal intelligentsia, Modi was a divisive, sectarian, authoritarian figure who had presided over the massacre of some 1200 innocents, mainly Muslim, as chief minister of the state of Gujarat in 2002. The thought of such a figure leading a diverse and multi-religious polity that had long been built on the "Nehruvian consensus" developed by the Congress Party, was anathema to many.

In the event, Modi overcame this negative perception, re-branding himself as an apostle of development and pointing to his successful record in Gujarat, a state of high growth rates that under his leadership has been a magnet for investors. His brilliantly-organized, lavishly-funded election campaign saw "Hindutva", the ideology of Hindu chauvinism with which he and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have long been identified, relegated to the back burner, while Modi promised voters he would remake India in the model of prosperous Gujarat. The electorate rewarded the BJP - which had never previously won more than 186 seats in India's 543-member Lower House - with 282 seats, as the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP claimed 333. The ruling Congress Party, of which I am a member, was relegated to its worst showing in history, winning a mere 44 seats.

NDTV opinion poll: BJP and allies cross 272 mark

New Delhi: NDTV's latest opinion poll shows the BJP and its allies collecting 275 seats, three more than needed to form the government.

The BJP, led by prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, gets 226 seats, the party's strongest performance ever and a very long way from the two it had won in 1984.  

With some canny late alliances like the one with the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, the BJP seems to have gained much ground in the penultimate lap of the general elections.
If this will be the BJP's best performance ever, its main rival the Congress, which has ruled straight for the last 10 years at the head of the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) registers a low point in its history. The party has never gone below 100, this time it is likely to dip to 92, the NDTV opinion poll shows.

Together with its allies, the Congress could touch a meagre 111, three short of it worst solo performance of 114 seats in 1999.

There is, however, one month and five phases of polling still to go before votes are counted on May 16, as all parties step up their campaigns in this crucial final leg of electioneering.  

The BJP had so far been projected as heading towards being the single largest party, but with its national alliance falling short of the majority mark. It seems to have only got better for the BJP as elections have neared.

In NDTV's February opinion poll Mr Modi's party was projected to get 196 seats, its NDA 230; the March opinion poll showed 214 for the BJP and 259 for the NDA.

But 275 is tight when a two per cent margin of error is factored in into the opinion poll's predictions and the BJP will have to sustain the pitch of its campaign in the next few days. 

The NDA crossing the magic 272 is heavily predicated on the BJP winning the 51 seats in UP that the latest opinion poll shows it winning.  

If the alliance does not reach 272, it will have to seek more allies from among regional players like J Jayalalithaa, who is expected to win a tidy number of seats in Tamil Nadu, or even Mamata Banerjee, who is projected to get a lion's share of West Bengal's 42 seats. 

Regional heavyweights like these are reportedly eyeing a bargaining position in government formation at the Centre.
